Where did the name Newly Weds Foods come from?

When the company was founded in 1932, the sole product was a confectionary treat called the ice cream cake roll. Newly Weds Foods had developed a batter system for sheet cake that could roll without cracking when combined with a layer of ice cream. This product was described by our founder as, “the perfect marriage of ice cream and cake.” The name Newly Weds Foods was born out of that description.

How did you get started in making food coatings?

In the early 1950’s Newly Weds Foods recognized the importance and potential of the then emerging frozen food industry. The company applied bakery-based technology in manufacturing appropriate batters & breadings that could withstand the rigors of freeze-thaw and longer distribution cycles. Getting an early start in serving this industry proved very strategic as Newly Weds became the leading producer of customized food coatings in the United States by the mid-1950’s and a position held to this day.

When were seasonings added to your capabilities and product portfolio?

Newly Weds entered the formulated seasonings arena in the late 1980’s. Through acquisition and organic growth we have grown that part of our business significantly to become one of the largest industrial seasoning suppliers supporting customers in both the food manufacturing and foodservice industries.

Why does Newly Weds Foods have so many manufacturing facilities?

The customer always comes first in Newly Weds’ business approach. Locating manufacturing facilities (most with on-site R&D labs) in close proximity to our customers means everything from a quicker response to their needs to transportation advantages. Also, having more plants provides for redundancies in manufacturing so we have a high level of assurance that should a line in one plant go down, we can shift that to another plant and not miss a customer order. This also means Newly Weds Foods has the available capacity to withstand a production disruption and to also keep pace with our customer’s growth.

Do you have any brands sold at retail stores that I might be familiar with?

The only real brand we have is Newly Weds Foods. Other than English Muffins that we’ve been making since the 1950’s, no retail products carry our name. That has been a conscious decision as we do not desire to compete directly with our customers on store shelves. Newly Weds does provide a wide range of packaging capabilities however, to support customer activity in private label or co-pack needs.
